What is a work activity center?

SCDD Description

This is an option where a self-advocate is paid for work that takes place in a facility-based workshop with other people with disabilities, not out in the community. Supervision is provided. Employees are usually paid less than minimum wage. It may include learning about work safety, managing money, good work habits and social skills.

DDS Description

A Work Activity Program provider supports individuals in paid work within a structured work activity center or similar setting.
Programs must meet Title 17 standards and provide supervised work opportunities that promote skill development and participation.

Example

A company that sells plastic forks, knives and spoons needs these utensils packaged with 20 in each bag. The work activity program gets the contract to do the work. You are one of many workers doing the job. When that contract is completed, there are usually other jobs that can last several weeks, months or years. These often involve assembling parts, packaging, labeling or other tasks.
