Recreational therapists work with self-advocates and their families by utilizing play, recreation, and leisure activities to improve the physical, cognitive and social/emotional abilities in the community. Specialized recreation includes, but not limited to: equestrian therapy, movement therapy and therapeutic play. The primary purpose of their treatment is to identify, improve and/or enhance the functional abilities and independence of the self-advocates through leisure and play as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of disability.

Regional centers can provide therapies specific to consumers' specialized needs.

My child's ability to interact with others is limited because of their lack of mobility due to the disability. Equestrian therapy may be able to help with better muscle control to reduce the effects of the disability.
