Are there special schools for children who are Deaf or Blind?

SCDD Description

California funds special schools for students up to age 22 who are Deaf and/or Blind which may include evaluation, education and room and board. Currently there are 6 schools: the California Schools for the Deaf in Fremont and Riverside, the California School for the Blind in Fremont, and Diagnostic Centers located in Fremont, Fresno, and Los Angeles.

DDS Description

Comprehensive Program for Deaf-Blind Individuals. Includes Evaluation, Training, and Room and Board.

Example

Your child is deaf and communicates using American Sign Language (ASL). There are no teachers, administrators, or students at your neighborhood school who know ASL. In order to be able to receive an education and have communication with peers, the regional center may pay for a Special School for the Deaf and/or Blind, if there is no other way to fund it.
