If I am a self-advocate, can I choose my respite worker directly?

SCDD Description

A self-advocate or family member may become a vendor who then purchases respite services from a person or agency who is not a family member. Respite provides the parent or primary caregiver relief for a certain number of hours per month, as agreed upon in the IPP.

DDS Description

Services provided in the family home that enable a caregiver or family member a break from the daily care needs of the consumer.

Example

You are a self-advocate with a 9-year-old son with developmental disabilities. You will need a respite worker for him when you go to your friend's wedding. The respite worker you want is not vendored with the regional center, but if you are the vendor, you can hire whomever you want that is qualified.
